Field Visit: INDIA
Notes from Marla's field log:The village of Paschim Surendranagar was reached by driving to a ferry boat crossing where we took a small ferrry across the Ganges River. We were supposed to take a trowler down river, but it wasn’t waiting for us at the scheduled time and place, so we decided to take the cycle vans down the island to the village. Then it started to rain, so we waited under the roof awning of some small shops until the rain stopped. By that time, the trowler had arrived, so we loaded everyone in and took the one hour boat ride instead. To get to the community, we had to remove our shoes and walk through mud and water at the edge of the island (with lots of help from villagers to keep us from falling in the very slippery mud). Upon arrival, we saw a water point that was completed just 10 days before our visit. We participated in an inauguration ceremony and interviewed the water committee. Current Work in India:Water 1st is currently funding new, clean water and sanitation projects in West Bengal, India in these 13 villages.
