Field Visit: BANGLADESH

  • LOCATION: Demra Slum, Dhaka City, Bangladesh
  • DATE FILMED: Oct, 2005
  • LENGTH: 4 min. 40 sec.
  • Quicktime 7 Required

Demra Slum is located in the capital city of Bangladesh - Dhaka City. Dhaka is the fastest growing city in Asia, with a population of nearly 14 million people. Four million people live in squatter settlements, such as Demra.

Water 1st visited the community of Demra Slum in the Fall of 2005, to document the water and sanitation problems currently faced by residents. We have begun work on a three-year project in Demra and Kamrangir Char slums, which will involve the construction and installation of approximately 60 deep wells and hand pumps, 16 community latrines, and 75 household latrines, benefiting 11,000 people.
