John’s interest in international development began as a Peace Corps volunteer in Colombia, where he provided engineering technical support to urban and rural communities implementing various community action activities, including clean water and sanitation projects. He also worked as an aerospace engineer on Project Apollo and as the Urban Planner for the Panama Canal Company. Returning to the U.S. he worked for many years for the federal Department of Health and Human Services in Washington D.C. and in the Seattle Regional Office. John worked in various offices, initially conducting program reviews and evaluations and later managing the Refugee Resettlement Program and TANF (welfare reform) programs for states and tribes in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. John retired a few years ago and has been active volunteering with the International Rescue Committee in Seattle, the Burke-Gilman PDA, tutoring at Beacon Hill elementary, and helping with food programs and emergency assistance at Blessed Sacrament Church. John has been working as a volunteer with Marla Smith-Nilson to develop partner evaluation materials and participate in field trips to Africa and India to help assess the quality of local NGO work. He also loves to hike, kayak, and play handball. |
